چکیده

A software tool for automated crack onset and growth simulations based on the eXtended Finite Element Method (X-FEM) has been developed. For the first time, this tool is able to simulate arbitrary crack growth and composite delamination without remeshing. The automated tool is integrated with Abaqus/Standard and Abaqus/CAE via the customization interfaces. It seamlessly works with the Commercial, Off-The-Shelf (COTS) Abaqus suite. Its unique features include: 1) CAE-based insertion of 2D or 3D multiple cracks with arbitrary shape of crack front independent of an existing mesh; 2) simulation of crack growth inside or between solid elements, and potentially along a shell/solid interface or along a shell/shell interface; 3) simulation of non self-similar crack growth along an arbitrary path or a user-specified interface; 4) extraction of near tip strain energy release rates via the modified VCCT; and 5) CAE-based data processing and visualization. The levelset method coupled with X-FEM is used to enrich the displacement field with jump and asymptotic near-tip solutions and track the crack geometry as it grows. A penalty-based formulation is developed within the UEL framework to simulate crack closure and frictional contact. To account for energy dissipation associated with the frictional contact, a modified VCCT approach is employed for an arbitrary crack front element with a partial contact zone. A fracture front tracking and levelset update module is used for either a userspecified growth size or a Paris-type fatigue law. Both the validity and applicability of the toolkit have been demonstrated via numerical examples.

Extended Finite Element Method for Fretting Fatigue Crack Propagation

In this paper, the extended finite element method (X-FEM) is considered for the analysis of fretting fatigue problems. A two-dimensional implementation of the XFEM is carried out within the finite element software ABAQUS by means of user subroutines, and crack propagation in fretting fatigue problems is investigated. On utilizing the non-linear contact capabilities of this code, the numerical t...

استفاده از دستگاه مختصات متعامد محلی در مدل کردن ترک دو بعدی به روش المان محدود توسعه یافته

The extended finite element method (X-FEM) is a numerical method for modeling discontinuties, such as cracks, within the standard finite element framework. In X-FEM, special functions are added to the finite element approximation. For crack modeling in linear elasticity, appropriate functions are used for modeling discontinuties along the crack length and simulating the singularity in the crack...

Effect of Compressive Residual Stress on the Corner Crack Growth

In the present study, plasticity induced crack closure (PICC) concept and three dimensional (3D) finite element methods (FEM) are used to study the effect of compressive residual stress field on the fatigue crack growth from a hole. To investigate the effect of compressive residual stress on crack opening levels and crack shape evolution, Carlson’s experiments were simulated. Crack shape evolut...

Modeling quasi-static crack growth with the extended finite element method Part II: Numerical applications

In Part I [Int. J. Solids Struct., 2003], we described the implementation of the extended finite element method (XFEM) within Dynaflowe, a standard finite element package. In our implementation, we focused on two-dimensional crack modeling in linear elasticity. For crack modeling in the X-FEM, a discontinuous function and the near-tip asymptotic functions are added to the finite element approxi...
